Why Bananas are Amazing in Smoothies – Coconut Carrot Cake Smoothie Recipe

Hey everybody! Today we’re making the Coconut Carrot Cake Smoothie. I’m Jenna, the founder of GreenBlender, and welcome to our video series. It is probably one of the world’s most favorite fruits, but believe it or not it’s actually classified as a berry, which I never think about. It dates back to the 6th century B.C. and the first banana farms were actually in Southeast Asia. The banana was actually was brought to the Americas by the Portuguese in the 16th century, but it really wasn’t popularized to the masses until 1876 in Philadelphia. during the Philadelphia Continental celebration. And they wrapped these in tin foil and sold them for ten cents each, which is pretty crazy because I think you can buy them at Trader Joe’s for ten cents each. I don’t know, but probably around that. So, the price has not gone up since 1876. These bananas are actually not grown from trees. Banana plants are actually classified as herbs. And if you can believe it, it’s actually the world’s largest herb and because it’s also often mistaken that they are trees, but they are actually herbs. The whole world loves bananas so much that we consume about a hundred billion – with a “B,” bananas every year. There’s over a thousand varietals but the ones that we know and love in the U.S are called the Cavendish banana which became popular in the 1960’s after it replaced this other kind of banana, the Gross-Michael ( hopefully I said that all right). Because that one was popular, but essentially became totally extinct because there was a fungus called the Panama disease that wiped it out in the 1960’s. There’s a lot of things you can do with a banana besides using them in your smoothie. Actually, the banana peel can help reduce inflammation if you rub it on your skin. Let’s say you have a mosquito bite, burn, or scrape, just rub the inside of the banana peel on that. If you rub the inside of the banana peel on your teeth every night, they actually whiten your teeth. And this I read, but I have not yet confirmed for myself. If you rub the banana peel on your forehead it’ll help alleviate a headache. I haven’t done it yet, and if you have let me know. You will smell like a banana, if you do that, but maybe you won’t have a headache. I don’t know. So, that is all I have to say about bananas. I mean, I could go on and on, but that’s all I’m going to say for now. Let’s talk about what else is in the recipe the Coconut Carrot Cake Smoothie. So, we’re going to do one carrot, of course and a banana. We’re going to do a tablespoon of coconut flakes, a teaspoon of cinnamon, and three tablespoons of walnuts, and some water and ice. So let’s get blending, a lot of people, usually some people open their banana from the bottom, but I usually just strip, cut it open like this. I find it much easier and the darker and the browner the banana gets just means the sweeter it is. So, you should never really throw out old bananas. They don’t go bad, they just get sweeter. You can always peel them and throw them into your freezer if you want to keep it. It makes your smoothie really frosty. Now, I went really crazy the other week talking about carrots so I’ll share the video with you about all the fun facts I learned about carrots. Spoiler alert! They do not help you see better at night. Of course, some coconut flakes which are going to give us some great healthy fats, going to make a little bit creamy. Cinnamon is a great natural sweetener and it actually comes from the inside of the bark of a tree. That’s why you often see them rolled up into cinnamon sticks because they just basically scrape the bark of a tree. Crazy! The world is a crazy place. I’m going to throw in some almonds -or sorry, walnuts, which is going to really make this smoothie feels like it’s a carrot cake. Now, let’s blend this up and see how it goes! Look at that color. So, excited for this one! Now, because carrots are kind of a dense vegetable make sure you blend your smoothie for a good solid minute or two. And if you really like an extra creamy smoothie you can always lightly steam the carrot and it’ll make it a little easier to blend. Alright, here it is. Let’s try it out! It tastes like coconut carrot cake! This smoothie is going to help you, it’s going to calm you down, it’s going to make your skin look great, and it’s also really high in fiber.
