Blender 2.8 Beginner Tutorial – Part 7: Texture Painting


– [Zach] Welcome to the seventh part of the Blender 2.8
Beginner’s Tutorial Series. In this video, we will texture
paint the apple and the knife using images which we project
paint onto the objects. So we’ve got realistic textures
for our materials later on. As always you can find the timestamps in the video description below. And if you want to follow along, sign up to our resource
section free of charge. There you can download
all the project files, textures and our handy
Blender 2.8 shortcut PDF. Hi everyone Zach here for
CGBoost.com and let’s get started. So let’s start with the texture painting process of the knife. And let’s start with the handle. First of all, let’s select
the blade here and hide this. Instead of using the eye here you can also simply press H to hide this. Let’s select the handle
and for texture painting simply click on the
texture painting workspace. As you can see, this turns pinkish and pinkish means always that there is basically no texture attached to it. So as you can see right
now, we are automatically switched to texture paint mode. And over here we have not the UV Editor. This is, as you can see, the image editor. Both looks pretty similar bit over here we, for example have
the paint mode enabled. Then in order to be able
to draw on an object, we need a plane image as
foundation to draw on. In order to add this, we simply click on the new button over here. Then this window pops up. Let’s simply call this knife paint. Then let’s change the
resolution to 2048 x 2048 which is basically a 2K resolution. This is quite high for a
simple object like the knife. But if we start with a
high resolution later on we can reduce the resolution
of the image anyway. Then we can define a base color. So for this, let’s simply use something similar as the handle,
something like this. But in the end this doesn’t matter because we paint over all
the important areas anyway. Then simply click okay. Let’s zoom back a bit. Now you can see this image was generated. As soon as we add an image here, this doesn’t mean that
this is also connected with the 3D model as you can see. In order to do that, you have
to go to this tab over here. And under texture slots,
the mode right now, change this to single image. And over here we don’t
want to create a new image, we simply pick the image we already have. So let’s click on this little image icon and use the knife paint. Then this image will be
connected to the handle over here then we can start to paint on this. But we don’t want to paint this by hand so basically I just could
start painting over here. And then you can see how
the pixels of the image will be colored depending on what I do. Down here if I collapse this, we have all the important
settings for the texture painting. For example we have the brush over here with a radius we can change. You can see it on the
circle in the 3D viewport. But to change this, we can also press F, move our mouse and
confirm with left click. You can see the radius over
here will change as well and this way we don’t always
need to move our mouse over here if we quickly wanna
change the size of the brush. Then, very important, since we will now project an image onto
the object over here, we need the full strength
because right now it’s basically just painting with 70%. So let’s set this to one. And now let’s add an image
we can use for painting. For that let’s go down
here to the texture tab, create a new image, let’s call this knife. Click on open, navigate
to your textures folder and here we use the knife texture. If you wanna have preview images, simply click on this button over here, then you’ll see what’s going on here. Click on the knife and then open image. Now we have this loaded into Blender. Let’s go back to this tab over here. And in order to connect this image to the texture painting, go to texture. You can see the knife’s already selected since we only have one texture. And very important, we wanna use a special projection mapping method. And for this, behind
mapping click on stencil. And now as soon as I move
my mouse above the 3D view, we have this little image down here which we just loaded into Blender. Basically, when I move
this with right click above my model and start
painting over this, everything I paint here will
be projected onto the model. CTRL+Z to undo this. You can see that the
image is square size now and a little bit stretched,
so what we have to do first is to click on image
aspect, then as you can see, this image is using the original
proportions of the image. And now we can start to paint this. So let’s go to front view, numpad one. Right click move it to the right spot and in order to scale the image you can hit shift+right click
and then move your mouse. And with CTRL+right click you can rotate the image if you’d like. But we don’t need that in this case. If you want to reset the transform, you simply click on this button over here. But then you also have to click
on image aspect once again. So let’s scale this up. This doesn’t has to match perfectly but it’s important that the whole model basically fits inside here. If the transparency of
the image is too strong, click on display down here and here you can increase
the texture alpha. And what I also would recommend
is to enable this button. It means as soon as we paint,
the image will be hidden. So let’s paint over here. And as you can see, now also
over here this will be painted. Now let’s press numpad nine to switch the view to the other side. Now you can see that the
image has the wrong rotation. So what we can do is simply set the X size of the texture to -1. Now we flipped the image basically. And here I wanna use this part down here. So I also have to flip
this along the Y axis, -1. Now I can move this above
here and paint over this. Now let’s press numpad seven
to view this from above and set the size back to positive one. And then let’s use the top view here and make the brush way smaller so that we don’t overpaint the
other stuff too much again. Carefully paint over this area. Then press numpad nine to
switch this to the other view. I don’t wanna use this part down here so I simply use the same texture again and simply paint over this area again. Then, we can investigate the model. I think that’s fine. If this image confuses you, simply turn down the alpha for a second and you can see here we
still have a little spot. And we don’t always need
to use these direct views. We can also stay here in
a user perspective view. Then let’s increase this again and simply use a part of
this texture once again and slightly paint this over here. (mouse clicking) It’s so small that we won’t
notice small mistakes anyways so we don’t have to care
about this that much. And the same thing I do back here. Just make sure that
the size of the texture is roughly the same as we have
painted on the other sides. So, now let’s turn down the
alpha and now let’s take a look. I think this looks quite good. So in order to make sure that this image over here stays saved, it’s not enough to just
save the blend file which I certainly do
recommend, you should do that. But you also have to save this
image over here externally because otherwise if you now
close Blender and reopen this, this image will be automatically deleted although Blender asks
you to save the image when you close Blender
which is quite helpful. In order to save the
image, click on image, save as, go to your texture folder, here you can change the name if you’d like but I just leave it as it is so I know what this image is about. An if you’d like, down here, you can change the format
of the image but PNG is good because this is lossless
without any quality loss but we don’t need an alpha channel, a transparent background
so we just use the RGB, the red, green and blue values basically a simple colored image. So I click on that and then
I click on save as image. Now I made sure that this image, what I’ve painted over
here is definitely saved. All right, now let’s texture
paint the blade of the knife. So let’s open the knife handle here and unhide the knife blade. Then let’s switch back to object
mode, select the blade here and let’s switch back
to texture paint mode. By the way, if you wanna
switch between different modes then just edit an object mode, you also can hold down CTRL+tab and hold these two buttons, then you can see that we have
all the modes listed here. And basically all you need to do is to move your mouse in the direction of the mode you wanna switch
to and then release CTRL+tab. This way you can quickly
switch between different modes without clicking on these buttons up here. We are now in texture paint mode. Let’s hide the handle here. Now, again we wanna use this texture here to project paint over here. Now we can see the UV Map
of the blade over here and the texture slot is
also set to knife paint. And this is correct because we wanna have one texture for both the
handle and the blade over here. Then again we wanna use this texture here for texture painting. Let’s increase the alpha
for the display here. Let’s take a look from the side. Numpad one, shift+right
click to scale this image. You can see, I’ve created
a separate blade up here which is a little longer which we can easily use to texture paint here. We have to make this a bit bigger because otherwise it doesn’t
cover the whole area here. So let’s simply paint over this, then let’s press numpad nine, and again set the X size
to -1 to flip the image. Then let’s paint this area here. Let’s set the alpha back to zero. Now you can see we have
these areas colored but this one here and
this one here is missing. What I don’t do is simply paint over here because we can maybe accidentally paint on this area here as well. So I wanna restrict the area here. So what I do, I simply
switch over to edit mode, go to the face selection
and with Alt+left click and click here and select the whole loop. You can see the triangle
here is not selected so I hold down shift, select this one and with shift I also
select this one here. So the whole area I want to paint on. And then I can easily switch
back to texture paint mode and enable this button here. Now you can see all these areas with the black wires here are not selected and the other stuff here is selected. You can also select stuff
here in texture paint mode but I find it easier to
do that in edit mode. That’s why I switched. Now, let’s take a look
from above, numpad seven. Re-enable the texture alpha. Let’s flip the image back. So set the X size back to positive one and simply put this blade above here and draw over this area. Then let’s do the same thing over here. Then let’s set the alpha back,
disable this button here. Now let’s check if everything looks right. I think this looks really good. Now you can see over here we have the texture on this map as well and now we need to save this again because we have changed
this image over here. So I click on image, save. So now the knife is textured. And as soon as I switch
out of texture paint mode, you can see that the texture disappears and that’s because this image was just projected on this object here temporarily because later on, we
need to connect the image using a material to the object
to see it in the final image we wanna output from this scene here. but more about this in
one of the next videos. So now let’s hide the
blade of the knife as well and unhide the apple over here. Now we wanna texture paint the apple. So let’s select this in object mode, then with CTRL+tab let’s switch
over to texture paint mode. Now you can see this image
is still connected here to the texture paint mode
so what we need to do, we need to click the X button here. That means we won’t delete the image. That just means we remove the
image from this view here. So let’s remove this. If you wanna take this back, you can simply click on this button and click on knife paint. But in this case, let’s remove this and let’s create a new one for the apple because this should
have a separate texture. Click on new. Let’s call it apple paint so that we know that this is a texture painted texture. Then again, let’s use a 2K
resolution, 2048 x 2048. Again, you can reduce this
later on if you’d like. But we wanna have a high quality here. And let’s use a simple
redish-base color for the apple. We don’t need transparency here so let’s disable alpha
and then click on okay. Now we need to connect this new image to the texture paint mode
over here for the apple. So in this tab over here, we
change the knife paint image, If I click on here to
the apple paint image. So before I start texture painting this, the stem of the apple is in the way when I want to texture
the body of the apple. So what I do, I press CTRL+tab
and switch to edit mode, left click somewhere
to deselect everything and then by hovering my
mouse above the stem, I press L and then I press H to hide this. You can see we have this left so let’s select this one here
as well and press H again. Now CTRL+tab and let’s switch
back to texture paint mode. And now you can see the stem is back but as soon as I click
on this button up here, the stem is gone but now also
the whole apple is deselected so I simply have to press
A to select everything. So now we need another
image for texture painting because we don’t wanna
texture paint the knife. So I go down here to the texture tab and first of all, let’s
click on this button to basically clean the settings down here. That doesn’t mean that I
remove or delete this texture. So click on that, click on new. Let’s call it apple and open the image from your texture folder and
here we have the apple image. And instead of left click
and then open image, you also can simply double
click on one image to open this. So now let’s get back to
the texture paint settings. You can see down here
the image is selected. Now you can click in here and switch between those two images. So we keep the apple enabled. Stencil and all the
settings are still enabled. First of all, let’s
increase the texture alpha so that we can see it. Then let’s reset the transform
and also the image aspect. Now we have this image here and we can start texture painting. You can see this image
contains the apple from below, from above and different
angles from the side. If I increase the alpha
here, we can see it better. The apple is a bit
complicated to photograph because it has a really reflective surface and the reflection of
the apple and 3D space, we wanna generate with the material, so it should be inside the image. That means I gave my best to reduce the strengths of the
glossy spots over here as much as I could in Photoshop. But you can still see them. But yeah, we have to deal with that here and it won’t hurt the final
result of the apple too much. So we just have to work with that. And down here you also have
the texture for the stem. So now let’s reduce the
texture alpha down here and start with the side of the apple. So maybe I tried to use the references without the yellow spot here. I think this makes this
look a bit more uniform. But yeah, we just have to try it out. Working in 3D means a lot of
trial and error, by the way. The apple looks a bit different but let’s just start painting. I always try to only
paint the inner spot here. Not too much on the side
because then we have these flat lines and we wanna
have a nice smooth transition between all the different angles. So let’s press numpad
three for the right view. Let’s use the next texture here. Make sure that on the one
side you cover the area until you hit basically
the other texture paint. Then let’s press numpad
one for the front view and numpad nine to switch
the view to the other side. Now let’s use this apple down here. And now let’s press three
and then numpad nine to switch to the opposite side. Let’s use this one over here. Now let’s reduce the alpha value. Let’s just check how the apple looks like. So if the apple sometimes
gets out of view, simply hit period on the numpad, then this will be focused again. Now let’s take a look from all the angles. I think this looks quite good. Now let’s take a look from above, increase the texture alpha again and let’s use the apple from above. So here we have to be really careful that we don’t paint too much on the side because then we have, let
me quickly show you this, this very harsh line over here. As you can see and this
doesn’t look so good so we only have to paint
in the inner area here. I press CTRL+Z to undo this
and let’s try it again. And now let’s take a look from below. Press numpad seven and then numpad nine. So when something like this happens here, as you can see I painted too far, let’s move back a bit and
let’s grab an apple which fits in this area here and
carefully paint over this spot. So I think that’s fine now
let’s reduce the texture alpha and now we also need to texture the stem, but before we do that, let’s
save the image over here. So we click on image, save as, we leave the name apple paint as it is, down here we use a PNG
format and RGB color and then click on save as image. Now this is saved so we
can’t lose it anymore. Then let’s press CTRL+S to
also save the blend file. Now let’s press Alt+H to unhide the stem. Let’s press Alt+A to deselect everything and let’s press L above the apple here to select only the parts down here and you can see if I press
L to select something, this is also restricted to
the seams we have set up. So if I switch over to edit mode, you can see it more clearly. If I press L over here then
it will only select this area. And this is due to the fact that the face selection is enabled. If I select vertex selection,
deselect everything, and press L again you can see
it will ignore the seams here. So no matter what you choose, make sure that everything here is selected then let’s go back to texture paint mode. And now let’s press H to hide the apple and press A to select
everything from the stem. Now let’s make the texture visible again, and let’s try to paint
some of those over here. It won’t look perfect because we have quite some hard shadows on this image, but in the end, it really doesn’t matter because this stem is so
small that we can’t see it that big anyway in our final scene. Just try to cover every
spot of the stem here. Now we have to make
sure that we don’t paint too much on the side here because otherwise we get these sharp edges so let’s make the brush really small. Here we have a sharp line still so let’s try to fix this a bit. And for the top part we also
have this little thing here. Let’s paint it to the top here. All right, that looks good to me. Let’s press Alt+H to unhide everything. Then let’s reduce the texture alpha and now let’s take a look. I think this looks quite decent. Now let’s click on image and
save this image once again. So now we have texture painted
both the apple and the knife. Let’s get back to layout over
here and unhide everything. Let’s move the apple to the side here and also the knife once
again so that we can see it. So now we basically have the foundation to add materials and textures
to the rest of the scene. Don’t forget to save
your file with CTRL+S. Yay guys, now you have a rough idea on how to use the texture

  • 8:33 Technically, to actually be lossless the compression setting would have to be set to 0%, as well. Minor quibble, great video!

  • Can you have a normal map as well? So when you're painting the diffuse/albedo a normal map is being referenced and projected to your new texture's normal map?
    Or would you need to …
    A: make a height map from your new diffuse/albedo texture to use, or then bake a normal map from that ?
    B: bake from a high poly model?
    C: Something else?

  • I couldn't paint on top of the knife. I selected the top faces in edit mode, and the top faces would not accept paint, with or with out the paint-mask mode enabled. I ended up projection painting in the 2d image editor over the UV island for the knife top. You might want to address this in the next video.

  • Im new to texture painting lol….danm this is difficult but I think I got some understanding of it. What's the difference between texture and texture mask? when I tried on both it seems to do the same thing? both are behaving like a stencil?

  • Hey, I am new in Blender and that's my second beginner series that I follow. In this Video I had a big problem with at one point almost made me stop and end the hole series. But first to the Background, in the second Video you sad don't copy the same only if you had no plan. So I thought Hey let's make instead of an apple a pear and a different type of Knife. In this Video for me it was not helpful at all. First the UV…. it was good to follow but for me I need a short introduction why and where to set the mark sean perfect and second the texture for both. You sad you give us some tricks to learn and make stuff on our own and that was for me completely right but in this Video I had no idea where to find an image on the internet etc so I painted instead directly on the object with some textures. But are there some better solution or ways to make this even better?

  • Not 100% sure, but I assume that you can still reduce the Angle-value to limit the painting to those faces facing your direction. That way it should be possible to texture only the blade's (and knife's) back without having to explicitly select the faces to paint on.

  • Anyone else faced the problem where you paint and the actual paint goes to the oppsitie face? I had to go to Mesh>Normals to flip the normals to fix that

  • When I texture paint the side of the knife blade from front view by pressing 1, somehow about a 1/6 of the bottom part (where the sharp edge is) does not get painted. It works to paint if I rotate my view though, so that I turn the top of the knife away from me, and the bottom gets closer. Why is that? Must the faces I paint be almost exactly perpendicular to the view?

  • For some reason when I try to paint with the stencil on the blade, the color isn’t the metallic color.

    The painting was fine for the handle and I haven’t changed any settings for the blade, so any reason why the color isn’t matching the stencil?

  • Ok I’ve followed everything perfectly but when I try to texture paint on the handle in “front view” it paints the back of the hand…. what’s going on??

  • Hello Zach! Help please! I've got problem the same as Bronte Bennani in comments below.
    When I try to texture paint the knife handle, it paints in the opposite side of the handle.
    Texture on handle is diplayed only when I highlight it in edit mode and return in texture pain mode. The knifes blade remains without texture. And vice versa. I highlight the knifes blade it got texture, but handle stay without texture. When I highlight in edit mode both and handle and blade with buttons shift and L, texture displayed only on handle.
    In lefh side of blender texture is present on handle and on blade.
    Dont understand what to do.

  • Ok so I had the knife handle and blade both texture painted perfectly and when I went on to texture the apple in your next video it was fine and when we started to texture the knife blade it was all fucked up. I went back to texture paint tab to look at the knife and indeed the texture paint was GONE! WHYYYY??????? Seems like I'm running into one thing after another in this tutorial where things keep fucking up even though I'm following perfectly . I think you're cutting away from what youre doing and not explaing every detail and youre not showing everything, therefore when we try to follow along we will not have the same result and even worse, the understanding . Please help

  • When in texture paint with the handle selected, nothing shows up in the regions panel. I have tried selecting the handle in both object and edit mode. Is there a way to add a screen shot to these comments?

  • Hello Sir, I am trying to paint the texture of my knife hand;e but when I try to paint the Surface the edge on the other side gets painted. Any Idea how can I resolve this issue? Please help with that. Thanks

  • I just cant do this…
    when i change to texture paint tab, my UV is not showing at the left (just the big square)
    Also, when i change the image to stencil, and put the mouse on the 3dwindow, it will not show the stencil…..
